The following links are for all the software bits and pieces (no pun intended) that I currently use for recording live dances to MP3 files, editing the files, and playing them at my tape groups. I hope you find this stuff as useful as I have.

Important notes regarding Windows Vista Compatibility.

This is the slideshow I used at my presentation at AACE 2006 "Digital Recordings for Tape Groups". It is available in Powerpoint and PDF (1 or 2 slides/page) formats.
Getting Started Guide Getting Started This is just a detailed step-by-step guide to installing, configuring, and operating all the software for recording, editing, and playing MP3 files. This should answer most of your questions.
dBpowerAMP Music Converter (latest version requires you to pay and register)
Get latest version here:
www.dbpoweramp.com
Or
Download this file (version 10, totally free):
dMC-r10.exe
Free software for recording and converting audio files to/from many different formats. It supports MP3 conversion. The latest version requires you to register to record or convert to MP3 format. The  older version 10 software will record and convert to MP3 format without registering (it is really 100% free), but does require you to download and install the free dMC Auxiliary Input add on (below) to record from the audio input jack.
Note: dBpowerAMP Music Converter does not allow you to edit ID tags (they store things like the Artist name, Album name and track number) in your MP3 files unless you register. But don't fret, you can edit ID tags with MP3 Direct Cut or with Winamp, and both are free. Or use UTagIt (below) which I wrote myself.
dMC Auxiliary Input Download this file (version 10, totally free):
dMC-Aux-Input.exe
Free add on to let you record MP3 files from your audio input jack. Requires dBpowerAMP Music Converter version 10.
MP3 Direct Cut Get latest version here:
www.mpesch3.de1.cc
or
Download this file:
mp3DC207.exe
A free editor that lets you edit your MP3 files without having to decompress them first. It even allows you to adjust the level of the file if it was recorded at too low a level. It is small and fast.
Winamp 5.35 Get latest version here:
www.winamp.com
One of the best and most popular free media players around. You want to use this one so you can use my free Wplayer (below), which adds all the features you need for a tape group. Caution: Wplayer does not work with Winamp version 3.xx, so be sure to download the latest 5.xx version. Wplayer will also work with the older Winamp 2.xx versions. And there never was a version 4.xx (it's a long story).
Wplayer Download this file:
SetupWplayer.exe
(fixes compatibility problem with newest Winamp)
I wrote this interface to make Winamp easy to use for square dance tape groups. You can read the Wplayer users guide here.
IR Assistant
(obsolete)
Download this file:
SetupIRAssistant.exe
(Not recommended for new installations. Use RfRemote below).

NEW EASY INSTALLER (includes the COM driver)! If you use my RF remote control system for your tape group, you need IR Assistant (or RfRemote below). It translates the commands from the transmitter into any Windows actions you want. For new easy setup instructions on setting up IRAssistant for use with my RF Remote control system and Wplayer, click here.

RfRemote Download this file:
SetupRfRemote.exe
Now you have a choice. I finally wrote my own replacement for IR Assistant. RfRemote lets you use my RF remote control system to control ANY Windows application. Control Wplayer for your tape group. Control Powerpoint. Control your DVD player software. Read the users manual here.
UTagIt Download this file:
SetupUTagIt.exe
This is an easy to use drag-and-drop MP3 ID3v1 tag editor written by yours truly. It can replace selected tags in whole groups of files at once, edit tags, copy tags from one file to another, assign sequentially numbered tags (like track numbers), etc. You can read the UTagIt users guide here.
Cool Edit 96 Download this file:
c96setup.exe
This is a WAV file editor which can also record. It has some useful functions for filtering out 60 Hz hum, or splitting stereo files into separate left and right track files.
RF Remote Control USB Drivers For Windows XP/Vista:
CDM 2.00.00.zip
For Windows 98/ME:
R10906.zip
These are the driver files for the USB version of my RF Remote Control system. For instructions on installing the USB driver click here.

More of my favorite software:

Open Office www.openoffice.org A totally free open source Office Suite. It has word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and drawing. It can read and write Microsoft Office documents, and is at least 99% compatible with Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
Gimp www.gimp.org A totally free open source image editing application. It has nearly all the features of Photoshop, and can read and write image files in almost every format from BMP to JPG to PNG.
Firefox www.mozilla.com Simply the best web browser. Free, open source, and cross platform for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
PDFCreator sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator A free PDF file creator that installs like a Windows print driver. If you can print it, you can have a PDF file of it.
